2019 would mark the 550th Prakash Purab (Illumination Day) of Guru Nanak Sahib. To commemorate this monumental event SikhRI is launching a children’s audio story series in English and Panjabi based on the life and travels of Guru Nanak Sahib. These well-loved stories will help to initiate Sikh children into the Guru’s life and his teachings in a non-judgmental way.

I once met an elderly man who had taken pictures before and after 1984. 
I asked him: “What was it like photographing 84’?” 
His response: “I feel like I have been photographing 1984 my entire life.” 
His response shook me and it became a very significant moment for me.
This experience led me to question - Why do I care about the violence that occurred during 1984…why should I care?

Amanpreet Kaur has a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology and a Bachelor of Laws. She is an alumna of Sikh Research Institute’s Sidak program and the World Sikh Organization’s (WSO) Sikh Youth Leadership Institute program. She is driven by a passion for defending the human rights of all, women’s empowerment and the protection of animals. Amanpreet’s most recent Seva project includes acting as WSO’s Lower Mainland representative for the 1 Billion Rising Initiative, a global initiative raising funds and creating care packages for survivors of domestic violence.

ਹਮ ਜੇਰ ਜਿਮੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪੀਰਾਮ ਸਾਇਕਾ ਰਾਇਆ ॥ ham jer jimī dunīā pīrām sāikā rāiā. هم زیر زمین دنیا پیران شیخ ها راییا All the sheikhs, spiritual teachers, rulers [will be buried] under the ground.

In this transcreation, the original Gurmukhi is followed by an English transcription to guide the pronunciation of the Sabad (Divine Word) in its original form.
The Persian recorded in the Guru Granth Sahib and standard Persian often have different pronunciations of words with the same meaning, and as such the Perso-Arabic transcription is written with spellings that allow a modern-day Persian reader to understand the text.
